Intended Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians and other health care professionals engaged in the management of patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
Activity Description
Cardiovascular disease places an enormous burden on health care systems. The management of heart failure represents an increasingly difficult challenge to the clinician due to the increased prevalence of ventricular dysfunction in this population and the ever-expanding indications for surgical treatment of cardiac disease. Major challenges to improving the care of patients with heart failure include current knowledge of optimal pharmacologic and surgical strategies.
This activity will discuss the complexity of treating heart failure in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Unique clinical challenges will be addressed, and evidence-based treatment strategies will be emphasized.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to
Characterize the typical preoperative risk profile of heart failure patients undergoing cardiac surgery
List perioperative complications associated with high-risk cardiac surgery
Review recent therapeutic and surgical advances to improve outcomes in patients with poor left ventricular function
