"Ragged, friable", may be detected by irregularity of the normally smooth lining of the ascending aorta on the left ventricular angiogram

"Liquid intramural disease", Intraluminal liquid debris, pale appearance of the aorta, adherence of the adventita

Ultrasonic assessment

Epiaortic scanning:

Wareing [Wareing 1993]

Mild

Local thickening < 3mm

Moderate

Intimal thickening 3-5mm

Severe

Thickening > 5mm, presence of marked calcification, protruding, mobile atheroma, ulcerated plaque, thrombi, circumferential involvement of all the ascending aorta

Transesophageal Echo:

Ribakove [Ribakove 1992]

Minimal intimal thickening
